ABS and ASTM A36 carbon steel belong to fundamentally different material chemistries. ABS is a polymeric material, while ASTM A36 carbon steel is a metal. They have a very high 99% of their average alloy composition in common. For each property being compared, the top bar is ASTM A36 carbon steel and the bottom bar is ASTM A572 grade 50.
ASTM A36 is the most commonly used mild and hot rolled steel. It has excellent welding properties and is suitable for grinding, punching, tapping, drilling and machining processes. Yield strength of ASTM A36 is less than that of cold roll C1018, thus enabling ASTM A36 to bend more readily than C1018.
